Healthcare IT Paper Accepted

2/19/2013 -- The paper titled "Enhancing Information Privacy and Data Sharing in a Healthcare IT Firm" is accepted to Journal of Information Privacy and Security. Authored by Drs. Wingyan Chung and Lewis Hershey, the paper examines the design of a data sharing system in a real-world company that produces and markets wearable communications devices for healthcare organizations. This research developed principles and guidelines for enhancing information privacy and data sharing and illustrates their application in a healthcare IT firm. Top Ranking in BI & Analytics

12/20/2012 -- Dr. Wingyan Chung is ranked among the top 20 academic authors globally in BI and Analytics, according to an article published in MIS Quarterly. The article, titled "Business Intelligence and Analytics: From Big Data to Big Impact," (full text) was published in the December 2012 issue of MIS Quarterly. The journal had the highest impact factor (4.978) of all peer-reviewed academic journals in the field of Business from 1992 to 2005. The ISI impact factor for 2011 was 4.447 (FSU news). ... more >


DB Projects Aid Communities

11/20/2012 -- Students of Dr. Wingyan Chung's Database Management course presented group projects that contribute to local communities. FSU Student Newspaper, Fayetteville local grocery store and automobile mechanic shop, and FSU security management are the clients for whom the students designed and developed relational databases. Under the instruction of Dr. Chung, the students used MySQL, a professional database software, to implement the databases. Research Helping Fayetteville

10/16/2012 -- Drs. Wingyan Chung and Lewis Hershey examine the image perception of the Greater Fayetteville and Cumberland County. In the research, Chung and Hershey developed novel techniques to analyze the large amount of quantitative and qualitative survey data on the brand image perception of GFCC. The paper is accepted to the 2012 BI Congress 3, a major venue for Big Data Analytics research and education. BI Congress 3 is sponsored by IBM, SAS, Teradata, and AIS SIGDSS. Dr. Hershey is Professor of Marketing at FSU and an affiliated member of KSL. ... more >


ICIS Paper Acceptance

10/1/2012 -- A paper authored by Dr. Wingyan Chung and Ms. Min Zhu (shown in picture), an affiliated member of KSL, is accepted to the 2012 International Conference on Information Systems. ICIS is widely regarded as the most prestigious gathering of academics and practitioners in the IS discipline. The paper examines a text mining approach to assessing company risks. Min was a student of Dr. Chung's data analytics class and extended her term project as the ICIS paper. Recommended by Dr. Chung, Min now pursues a master's degree in statistics. ... more >

NSF Award

8/14/2012 -- The National Science Foundation has awarded $199,244 to the proposal titled "Computing in Context" of which Dr. Wingyan Chung is a project leader. The project, jointly led by four universities - Villanova University, Virginia Tech, Fayetteville State U, and NCA&T - will create curricular exemplars in key ares of applied computing to support the breadth of relationships between computing and other disciplines. Ft. Bragg Security Symposium

5/17/2012 -- Dr. Wingyan Chung and his student presented in the Graduate Security Symposium at Fort Bragg. Nandeesh Kaggere (shown on right of the nearby picture), a graduate student of Dr. Chung's data analytics course, presented the paper titled "Using web analytics to profile U.S. domestic terrorism" at the symposium and attracted strong attention from military personnel and the participating scholars. 4/24/2012 -- The paper (co-authored with Dr. Li Chen) has been accepted to IEEE IT Professional. Group-buying, the paper's topic, is an emerging e-commerce phenomenon that is gaining traction among the Greater China regions. ISI papers accepted

4/17/2012 -- Two papers have been accepted to The 2012 IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics. The papers examine technical approaches in analyzing big and complicated data in domestic terrorism. Wen Tang (shown in picture), a student of Math and Computer Science department, co-authored one of the papers. As domestic terrorism remains a major concern of policy makers and the general public, the papers should help advance the field of intelligence and security informatics. ... more >


Journal paper accepted

2/9/2012 -- The paper titled "Discovering Business Intelligence from Online Product Reviews: A Rule-Induction Framework" is accepted to Expert Systems with Applications. The results indicate that the BI system developed in the research achieved high accuracy and coverage related to rule quality, and produced interesting and informative rules with high support and confidence values. The findings have important implications for market sentiment analysis and e-commerce reputation management. ... more >


Journal paper in press

1/10/2012 -- The paper titled "Managing Web Repositories in Emerging Economies: Case Studies of Browsing Web Directories" is published in International Journal of Information Management. The author describes in the paper a novel semi-automatic approach to facilitating Web repository management and presents case studies of developing and evaluating Web directories for the Spanish business and the Arabic medical domains, two rapidly-growing areas especially for multinational corporations and online users. Experimental studies involving Spanish-speaking participants and Arab participants respectively confirm the usability and performance of the directories. The research goals were to present the tremendous opportunities of supporting Web browsing in emerging economies and to develop new techniques and directories to enhance the browsing experience of a multitude of Web users speaking different languages. ... more >


New course: Data Analytics

1/9/2012 -- Dr. Wingyan Chung teaches a new graduate course on Data Analytics. The course introduces the technologies and managerial issues related to data analytics (DA) and business intelligence (BI). Students acquire technical and managerial skills in managing and building data analytics and predictive modeling applications. Emphasis is placed on learning how to derive business value from large amounts of data.
